Growing Up Gamer

By Rich · circa November 2004

Video Games.

Take a minute and just absorb that word.

As I grow more mature I begin to appreciate different things. From a gamers perspective I’m slowly leaving behind the idea that video games are a means to kill time and get a few cheap laughs and starting to realize all the love and labour that goes into making games such a unique experience.

Four Players and one screen? Nintendo, I love you.

And as games get bigger and become more visually advanced the creators experience becomes that much more entertaining. Take Metroid Prime Echoes for example, the original was loved by the gaming community so much that the creators wanted to make a sequel to an already entertaining experience – and the sequel looks to be a bigger, bolder game that’s simply more fun. The multiplayer part is something I’ve personally never seen before so I’m extra excited about Echoes, sure I’ve played death matches in Halo but Echoes environments are more organic and the auto targeting morph-ball blasting missile launching gameplay appeals to me more than other multiplayer shooters. And now that I’m older I appreciate games – especially ones where you frag your friends for hours – more, I also acknowledge the creators personality and feelings that get put into the design of games.

Looking back from this day I would never imagine myself watching all these Behind-the-Scenes movies about upcoming games. But then again, these type of movies weren’t as common back in the day so maybe I’m just sucking up everything the game industry spits out.

Regardless of the reason, one thing is for sure; games are a more entertaining and fun experience for me – and its not the games that have changed it’s me. I enjoy multiplayer games so much more now and I’ll actually listen closely to a games story; the level of depth and feeling one can get from a truly engrossing story is surprising and rewarding, and nothing can equal the gratification to surrendering to your friends in a deathmatch in which you just got schooled in.

The behind-the-visor display in Echoes makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I may come off a weak to most of you, but I just have to write about this – I’m new to the whole…how would you say…gaming as a living experience. You may be reading this and thinking “It’s about time Rich!” but it’s hard to walk away with the full experience of a game when your job involves taking apart games and critiquing them.

I’m curious about the gamers reading this article because we have something more than just video-games in common, we’re in the same purple cube shaped boat; so let me ask you a question. What is it that you enjoy so much about your games? You can even answer that if your willing by posting your comments to this article in our special message board.
