Wake Up Nintendo!

By Rich · circa March 2005

Lee: Nintendo have some of the most talented programmers and creative minds in the industry. who are held back by the fact that the head honchos simply do not know how to run a business in a competitive industry. I want to travel the world, or even the galaxy interacting with different people and destroying shit.

Richard: If Microsoft and Sony did not exist, I’m not sure I'd still be playing games. Mario games only last so long before you want something else.

Lee: This is true to a certian degree. It really depends on how far Nintendo's creative limitations extend. Plus their evasion of CD and DVD format and steep liscensing fees. I don't know. But I do know that I can't play Mario and Zelda over and over again.

Richard: There is UBisoft however - with Warrior Within, Chaos Theory, and all their amazing games.

Lee: Word, Prince of Persia rules.

Lee: Donkey Kong, the mighty ape who once revitalized platform gaming, is now a music game. Do you really think I am going to sit in my room banging psuedo-barrel drums in a rhythm game? Kirby is what? A second rate racing game on the cube? Star Fox has been taken from it's roots and into the clownshoes of a Zelda rip off and now a straight shooter

Richard: I wouldn't mind StarFox in Clownshoes - If it was meant to be a rip off joke of a game. But I think Nintendo was serious when they made Dinsosaur Planet

Lee: "we're not convinced that the future of gaming is online".

Richard: AHahaha - They need to play Halo 2

Lee: Dude I have not played Halo 2 online, but I know I would cut some one's head off for a shot at it.

Richard: I wouldn't be surprised if the new Zelda turned out to be a Board Game

Lee: Why not, Metal Gear Acid is a card game.

Richard: Yes but there's still Metal Gear 3 & 4...And San Andreas

Lee: My experience with MGS has limited positivity. Splinter Cell whoops it's ass without giving me 10 hours of fucking cut scenes.

Richard: Where are the mature interesting games!? Mario Shmario, Kids can have their Mario all they want. I want a fully functioning online rpg in the style of Zelda set in Hyrule. I want an online shooter based on the original Goldeneye but remade with RE4 graphics. I want an Animal Crossing 2!

Lee:GTA has remained as popular as it has because of (good marketing, bwahaha) the freedom it offered, and as long as no one else is providing that kind of freedom then it will stay on top.

Richard: It's all about freedom baby

Lee: Animal Crossing Online, I mean that's a no brainer to me. Get the fuck out of here. They should be all over that.

Richard: Sega did it on the Cube - twice. With the CARD GAME! There we go again with cards!

Lee: I'll go to Vegas if I want to fuck with cards.

Animal Crossing runs on piss poor graphics too - Imagine the possibilities with a DS > GC online plan. I could be playing four players at your house on the tv, while I'm in the subway on my DS. At least their getting this dual screened business right

Lee: I can play cards in Fable actually, but then again I can get married and drunk and murder shopkeepers and buy their property

Richard: Fable and Halo are both god examples of the kind of virtual freedom that sells.

Richard: I meant to say good, but that will suffice too.

Richard: And Sony has their GTA series for their freedom fighters. What does NIntendo offer in terms of unlimited possibilites?

Lee: One man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist. which is exactly what you do in GTA anyway, bwahaha. Or at least, what I do... DS is certainly an interesting proposition. They want to say it's their "third pillar" ... I say that it will devalue the GBA at any rate it has potential

Richard: certainly. I'm still skeptical of its visual limits though. Graphics create gameplay.

Lee: But what games have we to look forward too on the DS? Mario 64 x 4? Metroid Hunters? Animal Crossing? I've played all of these!

Lee: I want Nintendo to succeed more than anyone else, that should be noted. but as a gamer, they are not giving me what I want at this particular moment in time. And I'd be happy with next iterration of their legendary franchises. So long as they offered me something to go along with it. Something that a 19 year old who has been gaming since the NES can sink his teeth into.

Richard: Booyakasha
