Confessions Week 3: Mike

So I went to Disneyland last week and I’ll just come right out and admit it, I love Disney movies, and I’m sure everyone single person reading my “confession” has a favorite Disney movie or a special Disney memory. But let me ask you this: how many times have you sat there after watching a Disney movie and said “Whoa that would make a great game!”? Never? So I guess you know where I’m going with this.

A company is out to make money. So when some game companies (who will remain nameless) see a movie, they don’t focus on the plot, the characters, or the moral to it. No, they see big bucks to be made. Any hardcore gamer knows to stay as far away from movie licensed games as possible unless otherwise noted, and this is known by the creators while the game is in the works. So they are left with two options, either pump tons of time and/or money into the project in hopes that they will make a game that the true gamer will enjoy, or they can throw something together as fast as they can, and sell it geared towards little kids who don’t know anymore than what they see on the front of the box.

Unfortunately the latter is more common. The fact seems to be that these companies care more about making a quick buck, then giving people a quality product. Another problem that arises is that these movies are more like the flavor of the month rather than academy award winning, box office smash hits, so if too much time is put into the games then it will be a flop whether it’s good or not.

Disney has taken this dreaded curse to a whole other level, they have tripled this up. If you were to ask 10 people the first thing that came to their head when they heard, “Pirates of the Caribbean” (besides Johnny Depp) I cam assure you more than half would say a swashbuckling movie. But that beloved movie was and still is a ride in Disneyland, it was in fact the last ride that was looked over by the great Walt Disney himself. But this article isn’t about Disney rides it’s about games, and what do you know, they decided to turn this one into a game too. Now I haven’t played this game (nor do I plan to anytime soon), but I’m sure that it slipped under most peoples radar as it did mine. So what is next in store for our adored Captain Jack Sparrow, a cartoon mini-series perhaps? I wouldn’t be at all surprised, but Disney, please spare us the pain.

Even little babies get bored of crap..(That’s my brother btw :)

I know what you’re all thinking right now: Goldeneye. One of the greatest games of all time was in fact, a movie. So that must mean I’m completely wrong. Of course not; I’m never wrong. Back in the day of the N64, Rare was what every gaming company prayed every night to be like. It seemed everything they did turned out to be either game of the year, or in everybody’s collection. This is where Goldeneye comes in. Rare wasn’t out to make a quick buck at all, they saw quality in Goldeneye, and they put quality into Goldeneye. I remember back in the day when all people could talk about was how many cheats they had unlocked, or how far they got in Secret Agent mode. How many movie games can you say that about today, or even how many games at all?

Though it looks like a black screen, it’s really a video game I’m playing. Though I’m sure a black screen would be more exciting.

The movie to video game road is here to stay so there is nothing anyone can do about it. It is just a complete an utter shame that no one seems to be following Rare’s example of how truly great you can make a game based on a movie be. The fact is that whether a movie will make a good game or not, it will be made. But hey look on the bright side, you can never have too many coasters.
