Tony Hawks Underground

Tony Hawks. It’s virtually a household name by now.

With all the 900’s he’s landed, all the X Games he’s conquered, and all the skatepark tours he’s hosted, it’s no doubt you already know who I’m talking about. Wait, did I forget to mention his own skateboarding video game ‘Tony Hawks Pro Skater’? Oh, well that’s so 5 minutes ago anyways. What’s new is Tony Hawks Underground!

Tony Hawks Underground, also known as T.H.U.G., will be taking the Tony Hawks Pro Skater formula and totally remixing it. But don’t worry folks, the core gameplay that this series has always survived on is still in tact.

Who said skateboarding was a crime? Yeh that’s right, back away officer, back away.

So what exactly is new and improved? Well firstly, the biggest innovation I’ve noticed in this game is the ability to get off your board. I’ve always dreamed of stopping and walking through the city in THPS4, or watching the sunset on Venice Beach in THPS2. Being able to walk, climb, and run in THUG will open up an entire new way to play the game. You’ll also be able to mix running and skating into combos, making it much easier to string tricks together.

The second most notable innovation to the Tony Hawk series is the day/night cycles. If you skate for long enough, you’ll notice the city fall asleep and rise up again right before your very own eyes. The sun will set, street lights will turn on, and headlights will light up the roads as you tear up the streets all night and day.

You’ll also be able to customize the game to your standards. The ‘create-a-skater’ options have vastly improved to be more specific to your likings. The create-a-park options lets you add more pieces than ever, including whole entire buildings. And new to the series, the create-a-trick option, you’ll be able to create entire moves from scratch and implement them in the game. From the set buttons to press, to the name, to the exact movement of your skater, THUG looks to include the highest level of interactivity and customization seen so far in any Tony Hawk’s video game.

In THUG, you’ll be able to set the locations of the C-O-M-B-O letters.

Other notable additions to the series include the ability to place the C-O-M-B-O letters where you please during gameplay. You can even customize original gaps, and type in the dialogue for characters!

So as you can see, customization is the key to the Underground. And you can surely bet your hard earned money on Activision that they will be licensing a killer soundtrack like previous Hawk games, and including all the skater videos you’d expect.

Visually, the game’s looking to follow in THPS4’s footsteps with minor improvements, there is only so much a game about skateboarding can look like. Nevertheless, the levels looks gorgeous and massive, animation is flawless and smooth, and the game already looks like it’s ready to hit the streets. But it’s still got a few more months in development.

Tony Hawks Underground crashes into stores Fall 2003. Look for a review shortly after.
